Review and discussion on the presence and distribution of the White-rumped Hawk (Parabuteo leucorrhous) in northeastern Argentina

Abstract

The White-rumped Hawk (Parabuteo leucorrhous) has regular high-density populations in the montane forests of the Yungas in northwest Argentina. The population in the northeast is very low density, and in the last 65 years only two records have been documented in Misiones, with few observational reports. The species was noted for the provinces of the Chaco region (Chaco, Formosa and Santiago del Estero) and in Mesopotamia (Corrientes and Entre Ríos). In these five provinces the records do not have documentation, and most do not have descriptions or details. Many of the records are repeated general mentions that would come from original identification errors. Here we analyze the records of the eastern population of Argentina, discussing the keys for accurate identification in the field. The mountains of the province of Misiones would be key for the population of northeastern Argentina.
