First observation of cave use as shelters for Greater Rhea (Rhea americana) chicks in El Palmar National Park, Entre Ríos province, Argentina

Abstract

The Greater Rhea (Rhea americana) is the heaviest bird in South America and inhabits open environments in Argentina. It has a polygynous reproductive system and the male incubates the eggs and cares for the chicks. In El Palmar National Park, Entre Ríos province, Argentina, an adult male rhea was observed near a cave of the Six-banded armadillo (Euphractus sexcinctus), from which the chicks emerged and headed towards him.
