Abstract

We present a list of strictly observed birds during the navigation aboard the frigate ARA Libertad carried out between April 22 and 27, 2023, in the coastal zone of the Argentine continental platform in the province of Buenos Aires. This ship serves as a school vessel in the Argentine Navy. Its importance for bird watching lies in the fact that, since it does not present the characteristics of a fishing vessel, the birds are not lured to it by food issues. Of all the species observed during navigation, 17 correspond to pelagic and coastal seabirds, while five correspond to continental birds. Here, we also comment on those species that are of greatest interest, highlighting the Cape Verde Shearwater (Calonectris edwardsii), a scarce species for the country with insufficiently known conservation data, and the first mention of the records of the White-faced Ibis (Plegadis chihi), Least Seedsnipe (Thinocorus rumicivorus), and Sooty Tyrannulet (Serpophaga nigricans) at more than eight nautical miles (16 kilometers) from the coast.
