New records of rare birds in Puerto San Julián, Santa Cruz, Argentina

Abstract

The San Julián Peninsula and Bay are considered an Important Bird Area where approximately 150 species of birds have been recorded. I present records of six new species for the Puerto San Julián area (Tyrannus tyrannus; Cyanoliseus patagonus; Pitangus sulphuratus; Charadrius semipalmatus; Zenaida meloda; Patagioenas araucana). These observations are important because these species have very few records for the province of Santa Cruz. For example, I am reporting the second provincial record for T. tyrannus. At the same time, these observations provide novel information about the distribution of these species. For C. patagonus and P. sulphuratus, I am presenting some of the southernmost records to date. The presence of C. semipalmatus is very rare in the southernmost tip of the continent, so my observations, along with others that have occurred very recently, suggest that this migratory species could become a more regular visitor to this region. Z. meloda seems to be experiencing a significant expansion of its distribution range, and the record presented here supports this hypothesis. Finally, populations of P. araucana are recovering after experiencing a notable decline in the mid-1950s, so it is likely that their presence in the province will become more frequent
