Swallow-tailed Kite (Elanoides forficatus) in Bahia Blanca estuary, Buenos Aires: new vagrant record of southern coastal trend

Abstract

In Argentina, the Swallow-tailed Kite (Elanoides forficatus) breeds in the Yungas and the Paranaense Forest, and it is common to find wandering individuals over the Río de la Plata and the Atlantic coast of Buenos Aires Province. The southernmost documented record for the species occurred in 2020 in Pehuén-Có, southwestern Buenos Aires Province. In this paper, we report the second southernmost record of the Swallow-tailed Kite and the first sighting of the species in Bahía Blanca, Buenos Aires. We made this record in a protected area facing severe threats, during a birdwatching outing with the local community organized by the COA Loica Pampeana.
