Occurrence of the Large Elaenia (Elaenia spectabilis) in the central-southern region of Córdoba, Argentina: notes on its age, reproductive condition, morphometry and plumage analysis

Abstract

The Large Elaenia (Elaenia spectabilis) is a wide-spread neotropical species. In Argentina, it’s found from the north and north-east to the center of the country during the austral spring. Here we report the occurrence of the Large Elaenia in a new locality in the southern region of Córdoba province and analyze its plumage, breeding condition and age. In January 2023 we banded a Great Elaenia specimen in Río Cuarto city, the southernmost location for the species within Córdoba province. The specimen and plumage analysis concluded that it was a young and reproductively active male. This is important because it means that age can be determined through plumage analysis for Large Elaenias. Furthermore, this is the first report of a young and reproductively active male near the limits of the species breeding range, suggesting a possible expansion for the species.
