Unknown coloration for the genus Sporophila sp.: natural hybrid, chromatic aberration, or morph not yet described?

Abstract

In southern Entre Ríos, Argentina, most species of Sporophila sp. coexist in small remnants of grasslands and cattails. Recently, several morphs have been described for male Sporophila sp., some of which could be the result of hybridization. In this paper, I report the presence of an adult Sporophila sp. in Entre Ríos with a nuptial plumage that does not correspond to any of the forms or morphs reported for the genus so far. From the vocalizations and photographs I took I suggest and argue that this specimen could be a natural hybrid an individual of S. cinnamonea possible, this work highlights the importance of carrying out more detailed observations in the area in order to find other individuals with similar characteristics to those reported here, which will allow us to test which of the three proposed hypotheses explain the coloration, vocalizations and behavior of the observed individual.
