Bill abnormalities in Slaty-breasted Wood-Rail (Aramides saracura)

Abstract

Bill abnormalities in birds are rare and can have anatomical, histological, genetic or others origins, resulting in elongation, atrophy, curvature and/or winding of the maxilla or mandible. We report two cases of bill abnormalities in Slaty-breasted Wood-rail (Aramides saracura) observed at the municipality of Blumenau, Santa Catarina, Brazil. One of the individuals died, and was incorporated into the zoological collection of Fundação Universidade de Blumenau.
