Diet and feeding behavior of the Thick-billed Saltator (Saltator maxillosus) and Black-throated Grosbeak (S. fuliginosus) in Misiones, Argentina

Abstract

In Argentina, natural history data on the Thick-billed Pepitero (Saltator maxillosus) and Black-throated Grosbeak (S. fuliginosus) are scarce. Regarding its conservation status, Thick-billed Pepitero is considered a “data-deficient” species and Black-throated Grosbeak is considered “Least Concern”. We present diet and feeding behavior data based on 20 years of field observations. For Thick-billed Pepitero, we identified leaf (53%), fruit (13%), and flower (18%) consumption from 22 plant species across 13 families and observed foraging and arthropod capture (16%). The diet is primarily folivorous but falls within a range comparable to that of other species in the genus Saltator. Black-throated Grosbeak appears to consume a higher proportion of fruit. These results expand the list of dietary items for the Thick-billed Saltator beyond what has been previously reported in the literature and broaden our understanding of the diet of the genus Saltator.
