Review and discussion of the knowledge of the Boat- billed Heron (Cochlearius cochlearius) in Argentina

Abstract

In Argentina, the Boat-billed Heron (Cochlearius cochlearius) has historically been considered an occasional or extremely rare species. Based on a compilation of available information and consultations with people, we confirm that it breeds in three provinces in the northeast of the country: Formosa, Chaco, and Misiones. Streams and small rivers in the Chaco region may harbor dense populations, while in Misiones the stream system of Iguazú National Park and the homonymous river are key for the Boat-billed Heron population. The nocturnal, elusive behavior, together with the little-studied and difficult-to-access habitat where the species lives, would be the reason for the limited knowledge of the species in Argentina. Future detailed surveys in little-explored environments could elucidate the true population densities of the Boat-billed Heron in the country.
