First records of successful breeding of the Black Vulture (Coragyps atratus) in San Juan province, Argentina

Abstract

The Black Vulture (Coragyps atratus) is a scavenger bird widely distributed across the Americas, but with little documentation of its reproductive biology in the province of San Juan, Argentina. In this paper, we present the first records of successful breeding in this province, corresponding to two nests in abandoned cistern wells in Rawson department, in the El Desempeño private reserve, within the Argentine Monte ecoregion. We documented the production of seven fledglings between 2023 and 2026. The reproductive phenology is similar to that recorded in other provinces of the country. These findings expand our knowledge of the reproductive ecology of the species in human infrastructures in central-western Argentina.
