Presence of the Austral Pygmy Owl (Glaucidium nana) in Córdoba province, Argentina

Abstract

The winter distribution of the Austral Pygmy Owl (Glaucidium nana) in Argentina is poorly known, and previous records from Córdoba province lacked conclusive diagnostic evidence. In this study, we document the presence of the species in Córdoba, Argentina. The individual was captured in March 2025 at the Bird Banding Station of the National University of Río Cuarto (UNRC), in the city of Río Cuarto. This finding extends the known distribution range northwards and provides new evidence on the extent of the species’ migratory movements or seasonal displacements.
