Abstract

The Crowned-solitary eagle, or Chaco eagle (Buteogallus coronatus) is one of the most endangered raptor species in the Neotropics. Argentina, along with Brazil, Paraguay and Bolivia, is one of the countries where this endangered species is distributed. However, there are few provinces in Argentina where the successful reproduction of the species has been confirmed. The reports are concentrated in the provinces of La Pampa, Mendoza, Santa Fe and San Luis, with an anecdotal record in Córdoba. In this note, we report the first successful reproduction of the Chaco eagle in the province of Santiago del Estero. This finding highlights the Chaco Seco ecoregion as one of the most important environments for the species, and emphasizes the need to continue the conservation programs and monitoring of breeding populations of the species in this biome.
