New record of the Paint-billed Crake (Mustelirallus erythrops) in northeastern Argentina and contribution to the knowledge on diet and morphological measurements

Abstract

The Paint-billed Crake (Mustelirallus erythrops) is a secretive and little-known crake species, with a widespread but highly patchy distribution in the Americas. Records in Argentina are scarce, primarily concentrated in the northwest of the country. So far there were documented records in 13 provinces, with the most extreme record in Santa Cruz province. I present a new record in the country, along with data on its diet and biometrics. On September 23, 2023, an injured individual was found in the city of Corrientes, which could not be rehabilitated. I took morphometric measurements, recorded its body weight, and performed an analysis of stomach contents. The largest volume of food items corresponded to coleopteran remains, followed by seeds and plant remains. This record is the first for the species in the Corrientes province.
