The Cock-tailed Tyrant (Alectrurus tricolor): Extinct in Argentina?

Abstract

The Cock-tailed Tyrant (Alectrurus tricolor) is endemic to natural dry or humid grasslands in central and eastern South America. It is restricted to this environment in the Cerrado and Campos, and is considered Vulnerable. In Argentina, it was categorized as “critically endangered”, “presumably extinct” or “extinct”, since it has no documented records in the last 61 years. We review the historical information of Argentina and provide a recent visual record that raises doubts about the extinction of the species in the country.
