Abstract

In Argentina the Long-tufted Screech-Owl (Megascops sanctaecatarinae) is considered Vulnerable; its presence and distribution have been unclear for decades. Its taxonomic status, the lack of knowledge about its voices, and its cryptic habits allowed it to go unnoticed and ignored in the literature throughout the 20th Century. Recent information clarified its situation in Argentina, particularly in the province of Misiones, and based on dubious records of Black-capped screech Owl (Megascops atricapilla) it was suggested that it might be present in the province of Corrientes. On 8 April 2022 we documented records in two sectors of the Yohaza creek, at Establecimiento Las Marías, Santo Tomé, Corrientes. Our records are the first for this province, and they suggest that previous records of Black-capped screech Owl, in the same locality could be erroneous. Additionally, we recorded in coexistence the Buff-fronted Owl (Aegolius harrisii), which has vocalizations confused with the Long-tufted Screech-Owl, constituting the third modern locality of this species in Corrientes.
