Abstract

The plumage colour in birds determines intra and interspecific relationships of importance for individual survival. Leucism is a hereditary chromatic aberration that produces white feathers all over the body or in some areas of it. In recent years, cases of leucistic hummingbirds were reported in different regions of Neotropics. However, to date, there are no reports of hummingbirds with this aberrant plumage in Argentina. In this work, we present a case of a leucistic Emerald Hummingbird (Chrysuronia versicolor) observed in Puerto Iguazú city, Misiones, Argentina. This is the first report of leucism for the Trochilidae family in Argentina.
